About This Calculator
This is a free, independent tool for comparing the real fuel costs of electric vehicles vs. gasoline cars. No accounts, no tracking, no ads — just the math.
What It Does
You enter four numbers: your electricity price, your EV's energy efficiency, the local gas price, and your gas car's MPG. The calculator shows you the cost per mile for each, the estimated annual cost at your typical mileage, and the difference between them.
It supports both imperial (miles, MPG, $/gallon) and metric (km, L/100km, $/liter) units. The toggle is at the top of the calculator — no digging through settings.
What It Doesn't Cover
This is a fuel-cost-only comparison. It does not include:
- Vehicle purchase price or financing costs
- Insurance premiums
- Maintenance and repair costs (EVs typically have lower maintenance costs)
- Charger installation (one-time cost, typically $500–$2,500 for Level 2)
- Depreciation or resale value
- Tax credits or incentives
If you want a total cost of ownership comparison, you'll need to factor in these items separately. But for most people considering the switch to electric, fuel cost is the immediate, tangible, day-to-day difference — and that's what this tool measures.
Data Sources
EV efficiency ratings in the reference table come from the U.S. EPA's fueleconomy.gov, using 2024–2025 model year data. These are combined city/highway figures under standardized test conditions.
Reference electricity prices are based on U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. The 2025 U.S. average residential rate was approximately $0.14/kWh.
Reference gas prices are based on EIA data. The 2025 U.S. average regular gasoline price was approximately $3.10/gallon.
All reference data is clearly dated. Energy prices change — always use your most current local rates for the most accurate comparison.
About the Name
"EV Maxxing" is a nod to the optimization mindset: getting the most out of what you have. Whether you're already driving electric and want to minimize your charging costs, or you're evaluating whether the switch makes financial sense for your situation, the goal is the same — make the numbers work for you.
